Ukrainian counteroffensive - Zaporizhzhia
Russia and Ukraine
Fri Jun 16 2023 - skadefronUkrainian Counteroffensive Engages in Ongoing Battle Amidst Challenges.
The Ukrainian military's highly anticipated counteroffensive was launched under cover of darkness on the night of Sunday, June 4th. Comprising multiple waves, the operation involved the deployment of Western-supplied tanks, armored vehicles, and anti-mine vehicles equipped with advanced thermal imaging technology in the Zaporizhzhia front.
Navigating through the treacherous and heavily mined landscape, the counteroffensive took the form of a convoy. Night after night, since the operation's inception, Ukrainian forces have attempted to breach the fortified Zaporizhzhia area.
These persistent efforts have primarily focused on three strategic points along the Zaporozhye front, with the ultimate objective of advancing toward the strategically vital locations of Tokmak and Melitopol. Ukraine aims to sever Russia's access to Crimea, a critical strategic move. However, thus far, Ukrainian forces have been unable to penetrate Russia's elaborate defensive lines, characterized by multiple layers of fortification. The town of Tokmak, in particular, stands as a heavily fortified obstacle in their path.
Intense clashes continue to unfold within the abandoned settlements lining the contact line, with Makarivka emerging as one of the most hotly contested areas. Ukrainian forces relentlessly push forward, only to be met with fierce resistance and repulsion on a daily basis.
The toll on Ukraine's military in the Zaporozhye region has been devastating. The losses suffered thus far include over 8,000 personnel, more than 183 tanks, and over 418 armored vehicles. It is crucial to note that these figures only account for the reported losses, and the true extent of the casualties may be even higher. Among the notable casualties is the famous Leopard 2 tank, a significant blow to Ukrainian forces.
According to CNN, Ukrainian forces have encountered greater-than-expected resistance from Russian forces, resulting in significant losses of heavy equipment and soldiers. Senior US officials have described the losses, which include US-supplied MRAP armored personnel vehicles, as "significant." The first attempt to breach Russian lines in the eastern part of the country has proven to be a formidable challenge for the Ukrainian military.
Bakhmut/Artemovsk
Meanwhile, Ukraine also maintains its offensive efforts in the Bakhmut/Artemovsk front, albeit with fewer vehicles. However, the outcomes remain consistent, with Ukrainian forces facing stubborn resistance and encountering similar difficulties.
Defeat
In the face of ongoing challenges and the limited effectiveness of Ukraine's counteroffensive, there has been a concerning rise in the production of fabricated videos. These videos depict staged scenes of captured settlements and purported Russian prisoners, potentially aimed at boosting morale and fostering the illusion of progress among the Ukrainian population.
A photo have also appeared about Ukraine's wishful goal of the counteroffensive:
As the conflict intensifies and casualties mount, the Ukrainian counteroffensive in Zaporizhzhia confronts an uphill battle against well-entrenched Russian defenses. The ultimate outcome of this strategic endeavor remains uncertain, as both sides persist in their deadly struggle for control over the region.
